Contrast Distortion Metrics and Restoration Techniques
Karol Myszkowski (MPI Informatik)
The display of high dynamic range (HDR) images requires tone mapping to properly render the real world scene appearance on display devices with dynamic range deficit. In this presentation we overview briefly two examples of tone mapping operators. The first one is inspired by the anchoring theory of lightness perception as proposed by Gilchrist and his collaborators. The second one operates in the gradient domain and can be implemented on a GPU. We introduce image fidelity metrics, which we use to evaluate the contrast distortions introduced by the state-of-the-art tone mapping operators. The final part of my presentation deals with restoration techniques, which based on information available in HDR images can enhance global and local contrast in tone mapped images.
